Some houses in Astoria shown above were painted over 19 years ago and are still holding up. Please wait for the slide show to load. You might need java to view it if so  Download free java here!

Let me give you a short lesson about painting homes today by answering a few questions.

Have you ever wondered why your paint peeled on newer wood in only a couple of years or why paint always seemed to blister worse on the South side of your house or building?

Paint will fail prematurely when moisture content hasn't entirely escaped newer wood. Most lumber sold today in stores comes from second and third growth timber. Wood thats 'green' causes surface glaze problems when being mill sawn. The heat from saw blades pulls moisture content, tannins, saps and oils to the surface creating a contaminate on wood before being painted. This is why a new cedar board is always a little shiny on the smooth face of the board. The shine is mill glaze that requires removal!

Paint blisters on siding occur most on the south side when heavy moisture content is trapped behind siding. Another leading contributer to this historical problem came from radiator pipes located at the floor base of the wall cavity in older homes. This created condensation to rise into the raw wood from heated 160 to 180 degree steam vapor. The backside of the un-primed wood siding was saturated for years. Its no wonder an old houses attic smells moldy!

Its been our experience that lap siding historical paint build-up under the bottom edges of boards will not allow any moisture content to escape out of the structure. The result; In Spring the sun heats up the siding and pulls the winters hydrostatic vapor content through the wood making the paint blister an peel.

To Whom it May Concern --

This is a letter of recommendation for Jim Weaver Painting.

During the summer of 2003 we contracted with Jim Weaver Painting for a full exterior re-painting of our house near Oysterville, Washington. Mr. Weaver undertook this task and performed admirably!

This house is large, parts extend up to 3 stories high, and it has many windows, the trim for each of which needed to be painted by hand. The house stands in a seashore area that experiences extreme weather, and the previous work had not met our expectations. Jim Weaver's work in contrast, exceeded our expectations on every component of the project.

Specifically, Mr. Weaver gave careful and expert advice in choosing the type of paint, and the method of application; during the preparation, when he located areas in need of dry-rot repair, he pointed them out, and repaired appropriate sections with epoxy filler; Mr. Weaver and his workers were punctual, predictable, and tidy; and Mr. Weaver finished the job during the time allotted!

The quality of Jim Weaver's workmanship is excellent, and through one winter it has held up without noticeable deterioration from the elements. This stands in contrast to the previous paint on our home, which began to mildew and deteriorate almost immediately.

We would not hesitate to recommend Mr. Weaver for any paint job, and especially for challenging locations and high-value homes. Please feel free to contact us for further details.

Sincerely

Steven McGeady
